EMERGENCY BACKUP POWER: Telecommunications

GSA listed, Plug Power's GenCoreTM 5T system provides customers with extra long, emergency backup power for critical applications. The system consists of two modules, the Power Generation Module (PGM) or fuel cell and the Hydrogen Storage Module (HSM). Similar to a battery product, the fuel cells convert hydrogen to electricity via an electro-chemical process.

The GenCoreTM 5T is a five-kilowatt system and is available in 24, 48, 108, and 120 vdc. The Systems are designed for specific purposes and are offered in positive, negative, and floating ground depending on the application. The systems are designed to be scalable for higher power applications and as many as four GenCoreTM 5T units can be tied together to produce twenty kilowatts per hour.

Hydrogen is supplied to the GenCoreTM 5T from compressed gas cylinders. The amount of hydrogen stored and the electric load of the site is directly proportional to the length of backup available to the customer.

AVAILABLE FOR IMMEDIATE PURCHASE

These systems were designed specifically for the backup needs of wireless and wireline providers and are available for immediate purchase. They can also be purchased via our unique "Try Before you Buy Program". You may obtain a unit for 30 days or 150 operating hours. If the unit fails any of a list of specified tests, the customer will be under no obligation to purchase it.

CASE STUDY: ELGIN, SCOTLAND

A GenCoreTM installation provides a cost effective solution for remote cell tower operation without disrupting the ski environment of the Huntly Nordic Ski Centre training site in Elgin, Scotland.

The cell site is situated in a forest, 1500 feet above sea level at the Huntly Nordic Ski Centre training site, and provides telecommunication coverage between Rhynie and Elgin. The site's prime power is supplied by an LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) generator. The GenCoreTM system is providing emergency backup power to the remote location.

GenCoreTM Systems are marketed with a matching hydrogen storage module, which houses six cylinders of hydrogen, enough to provide 60 kilowatt hours of backup power, which is the typical amount supplied by the traditional battery backup solution in most telecom applications. The Elgin site was installed with enough hydrogen stored on site to provide 144 hours of power in case of primary power failure. This increases the reliability of the telecom network and reduces the need for maintenance.
